Walking on a Leash Walking on a Leash Walking on a leash is one of the most important skills your dog can learn. At Meyer’s Tails Up Farm in Belvidere IL, we know that leash training helps prevent pulling, increases safety, and strengthens the bond between you and your dog. While leash-pulling may seem like a small problem, it can make walks frustrating—or even dangerous—if left unaddressed. Teach Your Dog to Follow Off-Leash Before your dog can walk nicely on a leash, they must first learn to follow you off-leash. Your goal is to become the center of your dog’s attention. Use treats, toys, or enthusiastic praise to encourage your dog to stay close. If your dog tries to lead, slow down or change direction. Practice in safe, enclosed areas such as backyards or parks, gradually increasing challenges as your dog improves. Sits, Downs, and Stays Incorporate frequent sits, downs, and stays during your walks. This teaches your dog to calm down, focus, and pay attention to you. These brief pauses give you time to relax and reinforce good behavior. Over time, your dog will learn to remain close and calm, improving both off-leash and on-leash control. Teach Your Dog to Heel Off-Leash & On-Leash Lure your dog into the heel position using a treat or toy, and say “Heel.” Walk a few steps, then ask your dog to sit and reward them. Repeat the sequence indoors and in low-distraction areas before moving to the dog park or other off-leash spaces. Once your dog consistently heels off-leash, attach the leash and practice walking on-leash while maintaining the same commands. Walking On-Leash Start by teaching your dog not to pull when you are standing still. Hold the leash firmly and refuse to move until your dog slackens the leash and sits. Praise and reward immediately when they comply. Gradually increase the number of steps before stopping. Use the sit-heel-sit method at intersections and every 25 yards on your walk to maintain control and reinforce good behavior.
